CASHMERE — Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day will be bigger and with more displays than ever, say members of the airport’s advisory board.

“And for the first time, all three helicopter crews will have just come off firefighting duties here in Chelan County, so you'll be able to hear firsthand about the important role that these crews and aircraft play in fighting wildfires,” said York Baur, an advisory board member for the airport.

The one-day event on Sept. 12 welcomes visitors of all ages to the Cashmere-Dryden Airport for an annual celebration of aviation and the county-owned airport’s role in Chelan County.

Visitors will get a close-up view of about 50 single-engine airplanes on display, along with antique cars and helicopters from the Washington Army National Guard, Chelan County Sheriff’s Office and Life Flight Network. The Cashmere Fire Department also plans to bring a backcountry wildfire-fighting vehicle. Flight instructors and flying clubs will be available for visitors interested in exploring flying as a hobby or career, added Baur.

The event will include kid-friendly activities, food vendors, and large-scale RC aircraft demonstrations throughout the day. The remote-controlled aircraft are about 6 feet long with up to a 10-foot wingspan and will be flown over the airport. Wenatchee Red Apple Fliers is leading demonstrations throughout the day.

According to the county, the municipal airport opened in 1950, and primarily accommodates single-engine aircraft and helicopters. It is home to nearly 50 based aircraft. It is the only airport owned by Chelan County, averaging 3,500 operations a year.

“Airports provide important transportation infrastructure. As the old saying goes, ‘a mile of road will take you one mile, but a half mile of runway will take you anywhere in the world,’” said Bill McGlynn, an advisory board member for the airport and a pilot of 30 years.

The airport is an aviation base for nearly 50 aircraft and destination for visitors, according to McGlynn. It also plays an important role as a secondary firefighting base for the upper valley.

“The Cashmere-Dryden Airport is such an important emergency services resource here in the Wenatchee River Valley. We want everyone to see the important role that their airport plays, and to understand everything that we do to be a good neighbor to the community,” said Baur.

According to the county, the annual event brings in about 500 people each year. This year, Baur said the board hopes to double that number.

Cashmere-Dryden Airport Day is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the airport, 5500 Sullivan St. in Cashmere. The Chelan County government Facebook page will provide updates on the event if the air quality is unhealthy.
