WENATCHEE — Incumbent Randy Smith continues to lead in the race for Chelan County Public Utility District Commissioner District 2, maintaining a strong margin with 63.25% of the vote (18,039 votes) over challenger Steve Keene's 36.39% (10,380 votes), according to the latest ballot count released Wednesday.
Smith, who has served on the commission since 2007, appears positioned to secure another six-year term representing the western part of Chelan County. The position is part of the five-member commission that oversees the county's public utility operations.
The race saw a total of 28,521 votes cast, with write-in candidates receiving 102 votes, representing 0.36% of the total.
In the uncontested District A race, Commissioner Steve McKenna received 21,420 votes (98.99%), with write-in candidates accounting for 218 votes (1.01%).
The PUD Commission plays a crucial role in establishing policy, reviewing operations, and approving plans, budgets, and expenditures for the utility district. Commissioners also hold the authority to set rates and charges for services provided to county residents.
Earlier in the campaign, Keene, the former Peshastin Water District general manager and commissioner, expressed support for Smith, acknowledging his experience and service record.
The election results remain unofficial until certified by county election officials. The next ballot count is expected on Thursday, November 7, at 5:00 p.m.
