Manson Fire skips 2027 levy increase, citing wildfire season’s economic toll

MANSON — Chelan County Fire District 5 commissioners have voted to forgo an allowable 1% increase in regular property tax levy collections for 2027, citing financial pressures on residents and businesses following a difficult wildfire season.

The district, commonly known as Manson Fire, announced the decision Oct. 16 as part of its 2027 budget planning. The district said wildfires in the Lake Chelan Valley affected tourism, local businesses and the seasonal economy many Manson families depend on.

“The impacts of this year’s wildfires have extended well beyond the firelines, affecting local businesses, tourism, and the families who depend on our seasonal economy,” Fire Chief Michael Williams said. “Our Board understands those challenges and wanted to do its part to help reduce the financial burden on Manson taxpayers.”

The decision applies specifically to the optional annual increase in the district’s regular levy collections. It does not guarantee that individual property tax bills will remain unchanged. Changes in assessed values, new construction and levies imposed by other taxing jurisdictions can still affect those bills, the district said.

Manson Fire said it will continue maintaining emergency response capabilities, supporting volunteer and career firefighters and planning to replace aging equipment. The district is also developing a five-year strategic plan to guide decisions about staffing, fire apparatus, facilities and emergency services.

“Fiscal responsibility and public safety are not competing priorities,” Williams said. “Our responsibility is to make thoughtful decisions about how we use the resources entrusted to us.”

Williams said the district will continue seeking grants, looking for efficiencies and planning for future needs while considering financial pressures on the community.

The district said community participation remains an important part of its strategic planning process.
