WENATCHEE — It’s hot out in Wenatchee in July. It’s hard to balance going and doing things that are fun or interesting against how much sunblock you’re going to need or whether there will be food or drinks available.
The Wenatchee Valley Farmer’s Market at Pybus is that perfect outing you’ve been looking for. It’s open at 8 a.m. for the early risers and those who want to beat the crowd, and stays open until 1 p.m., so you can get your fill and decide whether you want tacos from the Market or something from inside Pybus for lunch.
With the brand new stage, Pybus now has live music outdoors, and the Wenatchee Applesox have partnered up with Solarity Credit Union to bring some incredible acts to the stage. On July 26, it was the incomparable Welter Brothers, a mix of folk, country, rock, soul, bluegrass and everything else that can be played on a guitar, banjo and a stompbox.
Lots of other talented local musicians have taken the stage this summer, from Charlie Solbrig to Erin McNamee and more, and even more exciting music is on the way before the Market winds down for the season in October.
The real harvest at the Market, though, is the vendors. Sue Gasbar has been doing farmer’s markets for more than 30 years with the Yaksum Canyon Truck Farm out of Cashmere. She was a schoolteacher out in Cashmere, but always had a passion for bringing her good to market, and a wood shop student in the eighth grade even fashioned her a handmade sign to go in her booth.
She is just one example of the many local producers, growers, and farmers that coalesce along the river from May to October. From flowers to fruit, potatoes to peppers, shave ice to iced lattes, the Market is full of something to have on the spot, take home and put in the fridge, or make for dinner when you get home.
Make some time on a Saturday, put on some sunscreen, and head down to 7 North Worthen Street, across the tracks at the bottom of Orondo Avenue. This is an outing that’s worth the whole family’s time.
