CHELAN COUNTY — Britini Port maintained her lead over incumbent Wes Cornelius on Wednesday as additional ballots were counted in the race for Chelan County assessor.
Port received 9,167 votes (53.20%), while Cornelius received 8,031 votes (46.61%). Because only two candidates filed for the office, both will advance to the November general election regardless of the primary outcome.
Cornelius was appointed assessor in 2023 after serving as the office's chief deputy and is seeking election to a full term. His campaign has emphasized experience in appraisal, modernization of the office and taxpayer service.
Port, a real estate broker and accredited appraiser, is challenging Cornelius on a platform centered on assessment equity, transparency and modernization of appraisal practices.
Port said Wednesday she was encouraged by the latest results while recognizing the race is far from decided.
"I'm very pleased with the results, but I know I am still going to need to work very hard to get elected in November," she said. "If anything, this was a good polling opportunity for me to see where I stand. I'm feeling optimistic!"
Cornelius struck a similarly measured tone after Tuesday night's initial returns, telling Ward Media he expected a competitive race that would likely tighten in the general election.
Washington will continue counting ballots received by Election Day throughout the week before certifying the election.
