MANSON — April is recognized as National Grange Month, a time to celebrate the role local Grange chapters play in supporting rural communities through service, agriculture and fellowship.
The 2026 theme, “Growing From the Ground Up,” emphasizes grassroots community strength and the continued relevance of the organization beyond its agricultural origins.
While the Grange is often associated with farming, organizers say its mission has always extended further.
“The Grange is often associated with farming—and while our roots are proudly agricultural, our purpose has always been much broader,” Manson Grange board member Debbie Conwell said. “From the beginning, the Grange was built on principles of strong character, community service, and active citizenship.”
Those values continue to guide the organization today, as local Granges serve as gathering places where residents connect, volunteer and respond to evolving community needs.
“The Grange is not just for farmers—it’s for anyone who cares about building a thriving, connected community,” she said.
The Manson Grange is one of approximately 1,700 local chapters nationwide. Locally, it offers programs, activities and service events focused on strengthening community ties and supporting charitable efforts. Members contribute volunteer hours and raise funds for a variety of causes, with an emphasis on grassroots action, education and agricultural awareness.
In addition to its role as a community hub, the Grange also serves as an advocacy organization. It is recognized as the nation’s oldest agriculture advocacy group, providing members opportunities to engage with policymakers on issues affecting rural areas.
Regular meetings at the Manson Grange include discussions on topics such as rural broadband access, climate change and rural healthcare. Policy recommendations developed at the local level can move through state Granges to the National Grange, which advocates on those issues in Washington, D.C.
Organizers say National Grange Month offers an opportunity to highlight both the organization’s history and its ongoing impact.
