CHELAN — Investigators have determined that a deadly residential fire on East Woodin Avenue last summer was intentionally set and constituted first-degree murder and first-degree arson, according to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire, which occurred Aug. 21 at a residence in the 400 block of East Woodin Avenue, resulted in the deaths of Nada D. Davidson, 63, and Michael W. Tappe, 67, and caused substantial bodily injury to Lauri A. Kerr, 55. Investigators identified Jason W. Glandon, 41, as the person responsible, but said he died several days later before charges could be filed.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives established probable cause that Glandon committed murder in the first degree and arson in the first degree in connection with the intentional ignition of the occupied residence. When Glandon was identified as the primary suspect on Aug. 24, a regional bulletin was issued in an effort to locate him. The following day, Brewster police notified investigators that Glandon had been found deceased.
Authorities said Glandon died of a pulmonary embolism caused by a deep vein thrombosis in his leg. At the time of his death, approximately four days after the fire, investigators noted that he had severe burns to the backs of his legs, indicating he was turned away from the fire or blast when he was exposed to intense heat or flames.
Despite the suspect’s death, investigators continued working the case, executing follow-up search warrants and conducting additional interviews. The Sheriff’s Office said additional evidence collected after Glandon’s death supported the conclusion that he intentionally set the fire, leading to the two deaths.
As previously reported, emergency responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:10 a.m. on Aug. 21 after reports of a structure fire. Deputies and firefighters arrived to find the two-story, four-bedroom home, built in 1935, nearly fully engulfed. Fire crews were able to prevent the flames from spreading to a neighboring business and an adjacent residence, but the home was declared a total loss.
At the time of the fire, 11 people were inside the residence. Two individuals were injured and transported to Lake Chelan Community Hospital. One was treated and released later that day, while another was transferred to Harborview Medical Center for additional care.
The investigation involved assistance from Chelan Fire and Rescue, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Chelan County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Washington State Patrol. Sheriff’s officials extended condolences to the victims’ families and thanked partner agencies for their assistance.
Because the identified suspect is deceased, no criminal charges will be filed. The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation has reached its conclusion based on the evidence collected.
