WENATCHEE — In a move blending weather caution and wildlife conservation, Chelan County Public Works has closed Horse Lake Road to vehicle traffic nearly a month early this season. A heavy rain forecast and slick conditions prompted gate closure at the road’s base ahead of the usual December 1 shutdown.
The gravel-dirt track cuts into the foothills north of Wenatchee and provides access to the popular Horse Lake Reserve trail system, managed by the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. The road is typically closed from December 1 through April 1 each year to protect the roadway’s soft surface from repeated freeze–thaw cycles and to shield wintering herds of mule deer.
Because recent storms had already made the dirt road hazardous and prone to damage, county officials opted to act ahead of schedule. The early closure is a reminder of how sensitive primitive roads can be when saturated and exposed to traffic under thaw-freeze conditions.
Residents and recreational users who hoped to hike or bike into the region by vehicle should adjust their plans. The closure means only pedestrian, non-motorized access will be allowed until reopening in the spring.
For users of the foothills trail network, the closure may redirect foot traffic to alternate year-round trails, such as those at Castle Rock or Saddle Rock.
Why the seasonal gate-down?
By stalling vehicle access from December to April, the County avoids soft-road damage when the ground repeatedly freezes and thaws. At the same time, closures give mule deer, which tend to bunch into the low-elevation foothills for winter, a quieter environment to feed and rest.
