EAST WENATCHEE — The City of East Wenatchee proclaimed Sept. 17–23 as Constitution Week during the City Council's Sept. 15 meeting, recognizing the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Melanie Baur, regent of the John Kendrick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the organization. Baur said the Wenatchee-based chapter includes members from throughout North Central Washington.
The proclamation, read into the record by councilmember Ettore Castellente, notes that the Constitution was signed Sept. 17, 1787, establishing the framework of the federal government and a system of checks and balances. It also recognizes the Constitution and its amendments as the foundation for rights, liberties and processes through which the country addresses change.
The proclamation describes an informed and engaged citizenry as essential to the constitutional system and encourages residents to observe Constitution Week through education, reflection, dialogue and civic engagement.
Following the presentation, Baur distributed pocket-sized copies of the Constitution to Mayor Jerrilea Crawford and members of the City Council. She also brought additional copies and offered them to members of the audience who wanted one.
Baur then joined Crawford and the council for a photograph commemorating the proclamation.
