MANSON — Community members gathered during the CVRW Club’s February meeting to honor local U.S. Army veteran Mathew Schwader with a Quilt of Valor, recognizing his military service and sacrifice.

The Quilt of Valor award is presented to service members and veterans who have been touched by war. The quilt serves as a symbol of gratitude and appreciation for their service to the nation.

Many in attendance shared personal connections to Schwader. Susie Metzger, who grew up with him, expressed pride in being able to recognize him publicly.

The quilt presented to Schwader was described as a tribute to community, comfort and strength, reflecting the gratitude of those in attendance and the broader community.

Schwader served in the Active Regular Army with the 9th Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion/47th Infantry, and the 2nd Infantry Division, 1st Battalion/31st Infantry (Mechanized). He was stationed along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, including during historically tense periods.

While serving, Schwader earned a perfect marksmanship score at Fort Lewis and was selected for an elite Scout Platoon. His training accomplishments also included climbing Mount Rainier and competing in the Sound to Narrows race in combat boots.

During the ceremony, presenters emphasized that freedom is not free. The Quilt of Valor was presented not only to recognize Schwader’s service, but also to offer comfort and serve as a reminder that his sacrifices are appreciated and not forgotten.

Community members concluded the ceremony by expressing their gratitude for his service.
