CHELAN — NCW Libraries and the city of Chelan have paused a planned renovation of the historic Chelan Library after workers discovered significant water damage affecting structural elements in the nearly 100-year-old building.
The project began as part of NCW Libraries’ Reimagining Spaces Project, a districtwide investment totaling $10 million. Of that amount, $591,609 had been allocated to the Chelan library.
According to NCW Libraries, facilities staff uncovered water damage that was not visible during initial planning. The damage affects structural components including flooring and framing.
Rather than continue with the renovation as planned, NCW Libraries and the city jointly decided to focus first on structural repairs.
The city of Chelan, which owns the building, approved a $150,000 budget amendment in March to pay for the repairs. NCW Libraries said the amount was based on estimates prepared by a third-party cost estimator and the project design team.
An additional $20,000 in state funding, secured through a direct appropriation by Rep. Mike Steele, has supported design and engineering work.
Work completed so far includes HVAC upgrades and fire and sprinkler improvements. NCW Libraries also said it has purchased and stored materials for the planned interior renovation, including furniture, shelving, lighting and flooring, so that work can move forward once repairs are finished.
The city is finalizing a request for proposals for contractors to complete the structural repair work. Construction could begin as early as this summer.
The Chelan library building remains closed, but services continue in the lobby and at other locations in the community. NCW Libraries staff are providing pop-up library services, Storytime at the Lake Chelan Community Center and drop-in technology assistance at the Chelan Senior Center. The Manson Library also remains open.
No reopening date has been set.
“This project reflects a shared commitment to preserving a vital public space,” said Amanda Lawson, Facilities Manager, NCW Libraries. “We are grateful for the community’s patience and support as we work together to complete this important investment in Chelan’s future.”
