WENATCHEE — The Chelan County Noxious Weed Control Board has launched an aggressive campaign to combat the spread of goatheads, a noxious weed known for its tire-puncturing abilities, throughout the region.
Officials announced Wednesday that weed-surveying efforts are intensifying, with a particular focus on Wenatchee neighborhoods throughout August. The initiative will revisit properties with known infestations from the previous year and identify new areas where the weed has taken root.
Adam Pfleeger, Chelan County Noxious Weed Board coordinator, stressed the importance of persistence in managing goathead infestations. "There are a variety of management options, from hand-pulling to herbicides, that are effective in controlling goatheads," Pfleeger said.
The noxious weed, scientifically known as Tribulus terrestris, is often found in high-traffic areas and recently disturbed sites, particularly in dry or gravelly locations. Its presence in alleys, sidewalks, rock landscaping, and vacant lots poses a significant threat to both urban and rural environments.
Goatheads are not only a nuisance to humans and pets but also pose a serious risk to livestock, as the plant is toxic if ingested. The weed's woody burrs, containing seeds, can remain dormant in soil for years, complicating eradication efforts.
While the board's primary focus is on education, officials warn that property owners who refuse to take action against infestations may face fees or civil infractions. "In the fight against noxious weeds, the best thing you can do for our community is to be an active steward of your private lands," Pfleeger added.
The Chelan County Noxious Weed Control Board recommends hand-pulling or hoeing as effective mechanical control methods, especially before seed formation. Chemical control through appropriate herbicide use is also suggested, with post-emergent products being most effective on younger plants.
