Cashmere seniors recognized at awards ceremony

CASHMERE – Recently, Cashmere High School seniors were recognized for their hard work at the Senior Awards Ceremony.

The ceremony included CHS Department Awards and Scholarship Presentations.

CHS guidance counselor Marcia Fall feels it is important to recognize the seniors for their success. 

“The recipients (CHS Seniors) have worked hard through their entire K-12th career and have been awarded scholarships because of the following: they have specific career plans for their future, which includes college or trade school; they have volunteered in the community through various service opportunities, they have challenged themselves and worked hard in their academic life,” Fall said.

Scholarships

The Jack Bartroff Memorial Scholarship is a new $6,000 scholarship for one CHS boy in memory of Jack Bartroff, a 1959 CHS grad. Jack attended the University of Washington, where he earned his DDS degree and completed postdoctoral studies in orthodontics at UCLA.  

Jack served as a dental officer in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan. He worked in private practice in San Diego, Mira Mesa, and Rancho Bernado before retiring in 1995.

The Barbara Bartroff Tilly Memorial Scholarship is a $6,000 scholarship given to one CHS girl in memory of Barbara Bartroff Tilly, a 1954 CHS grad. Barbara was ASB secretary and Princess Cashmere.  In 1958, she graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Music.  Barbara held teaching positions in Hayward, CA, and Wenatchee, WA. 

She then returned to the UW to earn her M.A. in School Counseling.  In addition, she has filled community leadership roles for Habitat for Humanity, Wenatchee Valley Symphony Association, The Republican Party, and Grace Lutheran Church.  

Barbara served on the Governor's Mansion Board of Trustees and was a board member of the Community Foundation of NCW. Barbara was elected as a PUD Commissioner in 1996 and served 12 years. 

The Village Art in the Park Scholarship was started in the 1980s and supports local artists who aspire to attain an art degree at an institute of higher learning. Mykla Smith is studying welding at Wenatchee Valley College and has won various art contests throughout the valley.

The Cashmere Schools Foundation Scholarship is through the Cashmere Schools Foundation. The purpose of the Cashmere Schools Foundation is to provide scholarships and other post-secondary support to Cashmere High School graduates. 

In 1999, Ron Doane began building the foundation around his idea of providing scholarships.   The board of Trustees now includes Bob Wildfang, Alex Garcia, Pat Henning, Tracy Franklin, Glenn Johnson, and Josh Stenderra. 

Fall said that this year, the Cashmere Schools Foundation gave 58 scholarships to 33 CHS graduating seniors and two renewal students, for a total of $107,200.00 managed by the CSF.
