Cappell files for Chelan County auditor following Moore retirement

WENATCHEE — Brandt Cappell, currently serving as acting Chelan County auditor, has filed to run for the position in the upcoming election as a Republican.

Cappell stepped into the role following the April 30 retirement of longtime Auditor Skip Moore.

He was hired as the county’s first chief deputy auditor in August 2025, a position approved by Chelan County commissioners, and has since worked across all major functions of the office.

“I am honored to serve as Acting Auditor and now seek the position of Auditor as a Republican,” Cappell said. “My focus will be upholding election integrity, continuing to provide the high level of service Chelan County citizens have come to expect, paying county employees the correct amount on time, and protecting the tax dollars entrusted to us.”

The county auditor’s office administers elections, records official documents, manages vehicle and vessel licensing, issues marriage licenses and oversees financial operations for county government.

Under Washington law, county commissioners are responsible for appointing someone to fill a vacancy in an elected position until the next election. Cappell is currently serving in an acting capacity following Moore’s retirement.

Cappell said that while the position is partisan, the work of the office is not.

“Although I am running as a Republican, the Auditor’s Office exists to serve every resident and business in Chelan County — regardless of party,” he said. “Chelan County deserves experienced, approachable leadership that is committed to getting the job done right.”

A graduate of Wenatchee High School, Cappell lives in Chelan County with his wife and three daughters.

As of May 4, candidate filing for the position was ongoing, and no other candidates had filed for the auditor seat.
