EDMONTON, Alberta — The Wenatchee AppleSox opened the 2026 West Coast League season with a 6-2 win over the Edmonton Riverhawks on Friday at Re/Max Field.
The game began after an hourlong rain delay. Wenatchee finished with nine hits and six RBIs.
Right-handed pitcher Luke Sterkel started for Wenatchee and allowed one run on three hits over five innings. Left-hander Joe Thornton pitched the final four innings, allowing one run.
Edmonton took a 1-0 lead before Wenatchee responded in the fifth inning. Designated hitter Nikko Paoletto hit a two-run double to give the AppleSox a 2-1 lead.
Catcher Joseph Coupland hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-1. Terrell Scott-Romain later drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Coupland added a two-run line-drive single to left-center field in the ninth inning to give Wenatchee a 6-2 lead.
Sterkel and Thornton combined to hold the Riverhawks to two runs on the night as Wenatchee earned its first victory of the season.
The AppleSox continue the series against Edmonton at 6:05 p.m. Pacific time Saturday and conclude the three-game set at 12:05 p.m. Pacific time Sunday, May 31.
